How to Make a Payment to HMRC for Self-Assessment


Paying your self-assessment tax bill doesn't need to be a headache. With a variety of payment options available, you can choose the method that suits you best. Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure you make your payment to HMRC smoothly and on time.


  1. Online or Telephone Banking (Faster Payments)

• One of the quickest and most straightforward ways to pay is via online or

telephone banking using the Faster Payments service. Here’s how:

o Log in to your online banking account.

o Set up a new payee using HMRC’s bank account details:

  • Sort code: 08-32-10

  • Account number: 12001020

o Enter your payment reference number, which is your Unique Taxpayer

Reference (UTR) followed by the letter ‘K’.

o Confirm the payment amount and complete the transaction.


2. Debit or Corporate Credit Card Online

• You can also pay directly on the HMRC website using your debit or corporate credit

card. Note that there may be a fee for using a corporate credit card.

o Visit the HMRC payment page.

o Select the option to pay by card.

o Enter your payment details, including your UTR as the payment reference.

o Submit your payment.


3. Direct Debit

• Setting up a direct debit can be a convenient way to ensure your payments are

made automatically.

o Log in to your HMRC online account.

o Go to the ‘Manage your direct debit’ section.

o Follow the instructions to set up a new direct debit, ensuring you have your

bank details ready.


4. Pay by Bacs

• To make a payment by Bacs, you’ll need to ensure it’s initiated at least three

working days before the due date.

o Set up a new payee in your online banking system using HMRC’s bank

details (Sort code: 08-32-10, Account number: 12001020).

o Include your UTR as the payment reference.

o Submit the payment for processing.


5. At the Post Office or Bank

• You can also make payments at your local Post Office or bank.

o Take your paying-in slip from HMRC and your payment.

o Visit your local Post Office or bank.

o Make the payment over the counter. Ensure you keep the receipt as proof of

payment.


6. Through Your HMRC Online Account

• If you’re registered for online services, you can pay directly through your

HMRC online account.

o Log in to your HMRC online account.

o Go to the ‘Payments’ section.

o Select ‘Make a Payment’ and follow the prompts.
